Brother LB6800PRW Project Runway Computerized Sewing Embroidery Machine Review

This is an relatively inexpensive machine packed with features. Out of the box I was pleased to find good long cords for both the power and the foot pedal. Excellent set of instructions esp. if you’ve never had a computerized machine before. While certainly not my first sewing machine, nor my first computerized sewing machine it is my first machine that does true embroidery and I was terribly impressed with the quality of the stitching.

I love the auto threading. Works perfectly so far.  It’s not a big area 4″x4″ but my need for embroidery was mostly for monogramming hand wovens and this suits just perfectly. The decorative stitches are wonderful and the scallop stitch is particularly pleasing. I’ve sewn a top on it, a muslin test pattern and the machine did a great job. Monkeyed with the embroidery unit with a few designs and all worked just perfectly Easy to select and adjust the stitches, good looking stitches and even. The drop in bobbin is as easy as it gets, and not a moments problem with the machine from the word go. It won’t replace my Bernina QE150 but for the money this is a well thought out and fun machine, providing lots of options that it does pretty darn well.

What I like about Brother LB-6800PRW

I’ve gone through a number of the sewing features, buttons holes, stretch stitches, some decorative stitching and a good amount of general sewing with it. The buttonholes are great, good selection for stretch stitches and the machine handled a tissue thin cotton jersey well. Hands free sewing and thread cutter are winners. I can’t say I’ll use the hands free option tons, but it’s nice to have if you have really tricky fabric or are needing both hands for something. The auto thread cutter, a winner as are the decorative stitches I’ve used. Nice even and well filled in as pre-programmed. You can also program the needle position to your favorite for any of the stitches. It usually resides to the left. The low bobbin indicator and I have come to terms, it really doesn’t alert at all with a lot of thread on it. If anything I am happier with this machine and it’s performance than I was on first review. I hope it proves to be durable because I am rather smitten with it.

What I don’t like about Brother LB-6800PRW

I don’t like the low bobbin alert, drives me nuts actually and wondering if there is a way that it can be adjusted to alert me just once instead of every 10 stitches. I am used to over riding needle position by tapping my heel on the foot pedal. I won’t tell you how many times I did it and it didn’t work. 🙂 You have to press a button on the machine head. It isn’t the speediest of stitchers and certainly not as powerful as the Bernina. The bobbin winder isn’t the greatest. It doesn’t nicely pop back when full. None of these things are deal breakers, the embroidery options more than make up for any piddly things I might gripe about and it is a nice sewing machine, no more or less plastic-y than many other machines.

Another thing I don’t like about this machine, actually LB6800PRW is identical to SE400 – which is about $100 cheaper, while the upgrade is actually NOT an upgrade. Brother seems to rebrand the SE400 with the Project Runway logo and charge $100 extra. So if you’d like to have this one, check the current deal on Amazon to see if it’s worth it, or you’d better read our Brother SE400 review and have a look at it on Amazon.
